01 THE CREATOR

Biography

José-Luis Munuera was born in Spain in 1972. After studying Fine Arts at the University of Granada, he began his career as a comic book artist. However, the comics industry was going through a difficult period in the 1990s, prompting Munuera to take a trip to Angoulême, France.

There, he met Joann Sfar, who wrote the three stories of Potamoks (Delcourt) for him. As success was slow to arrive, the two creators decided to present their work to another publisher, Dargaud. This led to the creation of the adventures of Merlin, the famous wizard, accompanied by Tartine, the ogre, and Jambon, the pig.

The series found its audience, and when Sfar no longer had time to write the scripts, Jean-David Morvan took over. Munuera and Morvan then created the wildly humorous Sir Pyle S. Culape (Soleil) and, together with Philippe Buchet, developed Nävis (Delcourt), a fantasy series for children.

In 2004, Munuera took on the new adventures of Spirou with Paris-sous-Seine, published by Dupuis.

Since then, Munuera has enjoyed continued success with numerous works, including Sortilèges (written by Jean Dufaux) and Fraternity (written by Juan Díaz Canales), both published by Dargaud, as well as Les Campbell and Zorglub, two series published by Dupuis for which he is both writer and artist.

A master of both original creations and the revival of established series, Munuera collaborated with the writing duo BeKa in 2020 to illustrate L'Envoyé spécial, the 65th volume of the iconic series Les Tuniques bleues, originally created by Raoul Cauvin, Salvérius, and Lambil.

In 2021, he returned to Dargaud with Bartleby le scribe, a graphic novel adaptation of Herman Melville's short story of the same name. In 2022, he turned to Charles Dickens, offering a free adaptation of A Christmas Carol under the title Un chant de Noël, also published by Dargaud.
